Making Comfort Quilts for Ronald McDonald House in Spokane

Our class and Mrs. Dahl's class decided to make comfort quilts for the children to use who stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane, Washington. Here are the steps in making the quilt squares.

1. First, we sketch smiling faces on white squares of paper using our pencils and then color the sketches using fabric crayons. Each white paper square is 4 inches by 4 inches. Here are three pencil sketches of smiling faces next to their finished colored drawings.

2. Second, an adult irons each facric crayon smiling face onto a square piece of white cloth. Each white cloth square is 4 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. When you iron on the crayon drawing exactly in the middle of the cloth, you have a 1/4 inch white border around the smiling face drawing.

3. We put all the ironed patches out on the table so we could look at all our smiling faces together.

4. The smiling face quilt squares are sewn together to make the top layer of the quilt. Then the top layer is sewn to a cloth backing with quilt batting in between.

Here is a picture of one of the large comfort quilts.

Here are some small comfort quilts for children to snuggle and hold at the Ronald McDonald House.

It is fun to make the comfort quilts! The smiling faces make us smile! We hope the comfort quilts comfort the children at the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane,Washington and bring smiles to their faces!!!
