We collected pop can tabs from our homes and brought them to school for the Spokane Ronald McDonald House Project. The Ronald McDonald House in Spokane recycles pop can tabs. They get $.50 for each pound of pop can tabs. They use the money to help get things for the house. Each of us had a little cardboard Ronald McDonald House for collecting our pop tabs at home. Here is a picture of a cardboard house.
We counted our classroom collection of pop can tabs for one of our math lessons. Here is what pop can tab looks like.
1. First,we put big piles of pop can tabs on each of our tables.
2. Next, we sorted the pop can tabs into groups of tens. This was a big job!!! Phew!!!!
3. Then, we counted our groups of tens at each table and made tally marks on a piece of paper for each group of ten.
4. Each table then added up their tally marks. Here is a small group at one table adding their tallies.
Here is an image of one table's tally marks. Each tally mark stands for 10 pop can tabs.
5. After each table tallied and totaled their pop can tabs, each table reported their total to the whole class.
We added up the totals from each table to get the number of pop can tabs we had in all:
1,027 + 916 + 488 + 1,031 + 720 = 4,182 !!!
We learned that it takes 933 pop can tabs to make 1 pound and that the Ronald McDonald House gets $.50 for each pound of pop can tabs.
Using math, that means that our 4,182 pop can tabs weigh 4.48 or almost 4 1/2 pounds. When our pop can tabs are recycled by the Ronald McDonald House, they will get about $2.25! Every little bit helps! We will keep collecting pop can tabs during the summer and next school year!
