Our class went on a field trip to the Pullman Memorial Hospital. We rode the city bus from our school to the hospital. Here we are in front of the hospital.
When
we got to the hospital, we had a tour. Our tour guide was named Abby.
Our tour started in the hospital lobby. Here is Abby asking us to be
quiet as we tour the hospital because there were patients who needed
rest.
Abby gave us all special hospital caps to wear on our tour.
First, we went to the x-ray room. We saw the x-ray machine that takes pictures of inside your body so that doctors can study how your body is doing. We saw a table that can move in all directions and we saw some x-ray films of people's bones. Here is a picture of the x-ray table.
In the x-ray room, there is an ultrasound machine. Doctors and nurses can look inside a person's body using the ultrasound machine. Here is the picture of the ultrasound machine.
After we were in the x-ray room, we went to C.T.Scan room. (C.T. stands for Computerized Tomography. Scan means to look carefully at the whole part of the body doctors are examining.). It was kind of dark in there. They showed us how they use this machine with computers. Here is the C.T. Scan machine.
Next, we went to the lab where they store blood and do lab tests to find out what's making people sick. We all wore blue coats and some of us wore goggles in the lab. We also wore rubber gloves. Here we are in the lab listening to the lab technician tell us about the lab.
There was lots to look at in the lab!!
After we were in the lab we went to the pharmacy and then we went to meet "patient" Berry Blue!
Berry Blue is one of the Sesame Street muppet singers. He is blue! He
was at Pullman Memorial Hospital because he needed his tonsils out.
Here is our tour guide, Abby, introducing us to Berry Blue and
showing us his tonsils.
Berry Blue is ready for surgery. Berry Blue will have an IV on his arm. IV stands for intravenous. The IV on his arm is attached to a tube which is connected to a bag of special medicine. The bag is attached to the IV stand. You can see the IV stand next to the arm of the chair. When you have surgery at the hospital, you get an IV. Here we are listening to Abby tell us about Berry Blue and his IV.
Berry Blue is showing us the mask that he will wear when the doctor gives him the anesthetic that puts him to sleep. He will get anesthetic medicine through the mask so he will be asleep when they take out his tonsils. He will get to choose the flavor of the medicine that puts him to sleep. He can choose either bubblegum flavor or grape flavor. Here is Berry Blue with his mask.
While Berry Blue is in the hospital, he will wear an ID bracelet with his name on it. ID stands for identification. The bracelet also tells the Pullman Memorial Hospital nurses and doctors that Berry Blue is allergic to brussel sprouts! They will be careful not to give him brussel sprouts! He wears the ID bracelet so that everyone will know who he is even when he is asleep and can't tell you his name. Here is Berry Blue's ID bracelet.
At then end of our tour, we went to the hospital cafeteria and had
delicious cookies! Thank you Abby and everyone at Pullman Memorial
Hospital for giving us such a great tour!!! If we ever have to go to
the hospital, we know we will have friendly doctors and nurses to
take care of us!
After our tour, we took the bus back to our school. Here we are waiting for the bus. We hope you enjoyed going on our tour with us!
