Reading Books About Hospital Care

We read picture books about children going to hospitals. Some of our classmates have been in the hospital and knew about what was it was like. Reading the books helped us know what it is like for children who are in hospitals. We read the books before we took our field trip to Pullman Memorial Hospital. Then, we read them again after we got back to see what things in the books were like our hospital here.

1. We read Going to the Hospital by Fred Rogers (published by The Putnam and Grosset Group, 1988)

In this book, we read about how children are taken care of by doctors and nurses when they are in the hospital. We learned that each child wears an ID bracelet. ID stands for Identification. We learned how children get X-rays and what their hospital beds look like. The book has photographs. We think it's a great book because theere are a lot of things you can learn and it makes going to the hospital seem okay!

2. We read A Visit to the Hospital featuring Jim Henson's Sesame Street Puppets (Random House Pictureback, 1985)

In this book we read about what happened to Grover when he went to the hospital to get his tonsils out. We learned about the operating room. Grover was brave. The hospital nurses and doctors took good care of him. Burt and Ernie came to visit him at the hospital. The colored pictures are good! We liked this book because we like Grover!

3.We read Tubes In My Ears by Virginia Dooley and illustrated by Miriam Katin (MONDO Publishing 1996).

In this book a boy, named Luke, tells us about his trip to the hopsital when he had to have tubes put in his ears. He was taken care of by Doctor Kim, Nurse Claire, Dr. Rivera, and Dr. Rice. Dr. Rivera is the anesthesiologist in this book. That's the doctor that puts you to sleep for the operation. We learned about heart monitors and "IVs" which are intravenous tubes. You will learn alot about the hospital if you read this book! The illustrations are great!

4.We read Going to the Hospital by Anne Civardi and Stephen Cartwright (Osbourne Publishing Ltd. 1995).

This is a story about a boy named Ben who goes to the hospital to have an operation on his ear. The people who help him are Doctor Small, Nurse Potter, Doctor Hart, and Bob the Orderly. The pictures are colorful and the story is easy to read. We think you'll like this book.

5. We read Stiches by Harriet Ziefert and pictures by Amy Aitken (Puffin/Penguin Books 1990).

This book is about a boy named Jon who fell off his bike and went to the doctor to get stiches. He was kind of afraid when he got his stiches but he was brave when he told his friends about it. This is an easy book to read.

6. We read My Doctor, My Friend by P.K. Hallinan (Hambilton-Hill Publishing 1996).

This book has great pictures! It tells you all about the way a doctor gives you a check up. The words in the book rhyme. We liked the end where it says:

"Yes, doctors are caring

in all that they do -

and they know how we feel

'cause they were kids too!

So, I trust in my doctor

to comfort and mend.

My doctor, my helper...

My doctor, my friend!"

We hope you will enjoy reading these books!
