Pond Photo Journal

January 20, 2000Before we went to the pond, we made predictions of what we thought we would see. Here are our predictions:

1. There might be a lot of ice.

2. The water might be ice.

3. The fish might be cold under the ice.

4. There might be snow on the ice.

5. There might be little spots of water.

6. The macroinvertebrates might be cold.

7. The ducks might be gone or have their heads tucked in their wings.

8. Maybe the turtles are gone.

On January 20, 2000, we went to the pond. It was really cold.

The pond was frozen and had snow on it.

The island has snow on it. There were no leaves on the willow tree. There were no leaves on the red osier dogwood. There were no ducks on the island or in the big pond.

This is a close-up picture of the island. It looks kind of camouflaged with the pond because of the snow and ice.

This is the edge of the big pond. The ice is thinner at the edge of the pond by the shore. The ice is thicker in the middle of the pond. Some branches are frozen in the pond ice.

There are three layers of ice. There is a thick layer with snow on it. There is another thick layer but it's a little thinner. Then there is a really thin layer. You can see the water below the thin layer. This edge of the pond looks like an eye.

This branch is frozen into the ice. It is on the edge of the pond.

There was frozen ice on the waterfall. There are some bushes beside the waterfall.

The grass was frozen and there was some snow on the grass. The snow made a crunching sound when we walked on it.

We took the temperature and the pH at the big pond. The temperature was 35 degrees Fahrenheit. The pH was 7. Our teacher broke a hole in the ice with a rock so we could take the temperature.

This is the stream that leads from the big to the little pond. The stream had water going under the thin ice.

This is the stream with thin ice over the water. You can see the water moving under the ice.

This is the stream that goes from the big pond to the little pond.

Some of the park got flooded when some snow melted. There are birch trees in the background. You can see the ice. The ice has snow on it.

This is the little pond. There is a sign that says caution thin ice. There is a farm in the background. There is snow on the ice.

There was a snowball on the little pond. Somebody made the snowball. We think maybe someone walked out on the pond and made the snowball. We could see footprints to the snowball.

This is a close-up of the sign that says caution thin ice. It is near the little pond.

This is the farm kind of close to the little pond. You can see evergreen trees and many other kinds of trees in the background near the farm.

This piece of ice in the farm stream looks like a sailboat. There is a big tree in the background.

When we were walking back to school we saw a frozen mountain ash berry tree. Birds like to eat the berries off of mountain ash trees. You can see evergreen trees in the background.
