Our Pond Photo Journal

May 3, 2001

Our class is outside our school and ready to go to the pond. There is a flowering tree behind us. It is Spring!

This is the flowering tree in front of our school. We studied flowering Spring trees in our classroom for science.

Our class is arriving at the pond. We stopped to look at a tree because it was like the Vine Maple tree branch we studied in our classroom. It had blooming flowers and it had pointed leaves like the vine maple.

This is the tree that looks like a maple tree. It has flowers.

This is a close-up picture of the flowering tree. The leaves are beautiful. The leaves have points on them like a maple leaves.

A classmate is touching the flowers of the tree.

Classmates are making observations about the pond. They are raising their hands to share their observations.

A classmate and our Spanish teacher are taking the water temperature and pH.

Our classmate is reporting the water temperature and pH to the class.

This is the island in the big pond. The water level was low because the pump at the little pond that pumps water to the waterfall and big pond was broken. The city had to fix it. You can see the border of rocks around the shore of the island because the water is low. The rocks hold up the shore of the island.

There was box by the shore in the big pond! Someone left this litter at the pond.
The red osier dogwood doesn't have its leaves yet. It just has leaf buds. The willow tree doesn't have its leaves either.

The waterfall doesn't have any water. The pump that pumps water from the little pond to the waterfall and the big pond was broken.

The small pond only has a little water because the pump that pumps water into the small pond and up to the waterfall was broken. The city was fixing the pump.

There were some goldfish and catfish swimming in the shallow water of the small pond.

There were only two ducks at the ponds. There was a male mallard duck swimming in the small pond. There was a female mallard duck swimming in the small pond.

Most of the small pond was muddy, really muddy. This is the muddy shore of the small pond.

There were lots of tracks in the small pond mud.
When we got back from the pond, we called the City of Pullman to find out why the small pond didn't have much water. We talked to Mr. Alan Davis who takes care of the city parks and the ponds at Sunnyside Park.
He told us that the pump by the small pond was broken and they were fixing it. The small ponds gets some of its water from a spring so there was a little water in the small pond.
The next time we go to the pond, the pump will be fixed. The small pond will be filled with water. There will be water in the waterfall. The water level won't be low in the big pond. There will be water going over the spillway and water in the stream.
