Chapter 3
Sewing the Comfort Quilts

1.We are putting the patches together for the quilt. We did not put the same color background adjacent to each other in the quilt because the patches would not stand out as much.

2.Each row had a pattern of "patch, spacer, patch, spacer, patch." We were working with a classmate's parent to pin the patches to the spacers.

3.When we finished pinning a row of three patches and two spacers than we started all over again on another row.

4. A classmate and a classmate's mom are showing us a row of patch, spacer, patch, spacer, patch. They are using the sewing machine to sew the patch to the spacer. We sewed vertical and horizontal spacers to separate the patches. The three rows in the picture above will be sewn together with horizontal spacers to make a quilt top.We sewed the fabric on the back so the stitches and the seams will not show on the front.

Our classmate and her Mom are ironing the seam of the quilt patches and spacers.

5. We sewed the three rows together and then we sewed borders around the three rows. This makes the top of the comfort quilt. The top of the quilt has 3 rows with 3 patches in each row. It is a 9 patch quilt.

6. We put batting in the middle behind the comfort quilt top.

7. Then we put a backing on the back of the quilt behind the batting.

8. Here are the three comfort quilt layers together. You can see the top, the batting, and the backing.

9. We *basted the backing and batting to the top of the quilt with big stitches. Then we sewed around each patch of the quilt on the sewing machine to hold the three layers together.

*Basted means sewing with long loose big stitches that you take out after you do your small stitches.

10. Here is the quilt with the top, batting, and backing stitched together. You can see the green vertical spacers, horizontal spacers and borders.

11. Next we sewed a binding around the edges of the quilt. We sewed the binding by hand.

12. A parent and a classmate are sewing the binding onto a comfort quilt.

13. Here is a picture of some of our classmates and our parents with our teacher when we finished our first comfort quilt. Moms and children helped make the comfort quilts. We felt happy that the quilts can be sent to New York City. We hope the children in New York City will feel comforted.

14. We also made comfort quilts for Afghanistan children. the quilts are being delivered to them by NetAid.
