Chapter 1
How We Made the Comfort Quilt Patches

1.We made pictures of our faces smiling.

2. First, we drew a large circle on a square piece of paper with a pencil.

3. The paper was five inches long and five inches tall.

4. We drew our eyes and our mouths smiling so that the children wouldn't feel sad.

5. Then, we drew our hair to make our pictures look like us.

6. After we sketched, we colored in our faces with fabric crayons.

7. We colored our eyes and mouth first and then we colored the skin, and finally we added our hair.

8. Sometimes we drew different faces than our own faces.

9. Some people made two faces (one that looked like them and one that did not.)

10. After we colored our faces we colored a background so that the patch would show more than just a face.

11. If the patch did not have a background it would not show up as much on the comfort quilt because a background helps the face stand out.

12. We pressed hard with the crayons on the paper to make the colors dark so the face and background would show up when we ironed our pictures onto the fabric.

13. We are working hard in the classroom because we are making comfort quilts for the children in New York City and for Afghanistan children.

14. At this table, classmates are working on different stages of their quilt patches like drawing their faces, coloring their faces and hair, or coloring their background.
