Date: February 2000

*Teacher note: After reading and talking about Ms. McLane's messages, the class worked in small groups to think of ideas for writing email responses to her. They talked about telling her what they have learned from her messages, what questions they wanted to ask her and about writing words that would encourage her because they knew she had experienced lots of rain and challenging bicycle rides. Then they went into our school computer lab to write their messages. They used the skills they have learned from their Keyboarding and their Bird Print Writing Process They independently generated their content and voice (through choices of punctuation, capitalizations and vocabulary) and then had assistance from the teacher to edit for books spellings, for periods at the ends of sentences, and for capitalization at the beginning of sentences and for names.
