Ladybug Quilt

Each day of school, beginning on the first day of school, we added a patch to our ladybug quilt and made comments about math ideas in the quilt. Here is our finished ladybug quilt. Click on each patch to learn the comments for the day that patch was added to the quilt.

1. We have a color pattern by rows:

1st row is [yellow,red,red,yellow,red]

2nd row is [red,yellow,red,red,yellow]

3rd row is [yellow, red, yellow, red, red]

4th row is [red,red,red,yellow,red]

5th row is [red, yellow, red, red, yellow]

2.We have 16 red backgrounds and 9 yellow backgrounds.

3. We have 25 patches.

4.We have a pattern of letters by rows that goes ABCDE

CABED

DEABC

BCEAB

EDCBA

5.We have a pattern by numbers that goes

12345

31254

45123

23512

54321

We can play these numbers on our classroom chimalong (xylophone) to make a Ladybug Quilt Song! Click to hear our song in QuickTime format.

6. The 5th row has A at the end then B next to that then C then D then E.

7. On the top row, it goes ABCDE and on the bottom row it goes EDCBA.

8. The 5th row goes one way and the 1st row goes another way. Another ABCDE wouldn't work in the last row.

9.The 1st row goes ABCDE and the 5th row goes EDCBA, so the 5th row is oppositie of the 1st row. The pattern reverses.

10.We have a diagonal of five Ladybugs that goes from the top left corner to the bottom.

Here is data about our patches:

11.We have 5 Ladybug patches 6 large white dot patches 5 tan dot patches 4 red dot patches 5 small white dot patches

12. We have 5 A patches 6 B patches 5 C patches 4 D patches 5 E patches

13. We have 5 #1 patches 6 #2 patches 5 #3 patches 4 #4 patches 5 #5 patches Most patches: large white dot patches Least patches: red dot patches Same number patches: ladybug, small white dot, and tan dot patches.

14. Patch #1 is connected from corner to corner and patch #2 has only 4 patches that are touching corners, and #3, #4, and #5 have only two touching corners.

15. We have a prediction that the next patch will be no patch because our quilt is done!
