Paper Quilt Math:

1. Maple Leaf Quilt Blocks

2. Pinwheel Quilt Blocks

3. Maple Leaf + Pinwheel Quilt Blocks

1. Maple Leaf Quilt: We made paper quilt blocks to learn about the geometry and algebra. First, we made paper Maple Leaf Quilt Blocks. Each maple leaf quilt block is made of 5 squares and 8 triangles. First, we made the maple leaf using 3 squares and 4 triangles of one color. Then we made the background using 2 squares and 4 triangles. Here is an algebra math sentence that describes this quilt block:

3 blue squares + 4 blue triangles + 2 lilac squares + 4 lilac triangles = 1 maple leaf quilt block

We glued our paper maple leaf quilt design onto black paper. Here is a collection of 12 paper maple leaf quilt blocks made by the class. Together they make a 12 patch paper maple leaf quilt.

Can you find any maple leaf blocks that have opposite colors for the leaf and the background?

How many squares are there all together in the 12 block maple leaf paper quilt?

How many triangles are there all together in the 12 block maple leaf paper quilt?

2. Pinwheel Quilt Blocks: After we made our paper maple leaf quilt blocks. we made paper Pinwheel Quilt Blocks. Each pinwheel quilt block has three colors of triangles. This pinwheel has 4 large blue triangles, 4 small turquoise blue triangles, and 4 small light blue triangles. Here is an algebra math sentence that describes this pinwheel quilt block:

4 large blue triangles + 4 small turquoise blue triangles + 4 small light blue triangles = 1 pinwheel quilt block

The pinwheel quilt block is challenging to make. If you look at it closely, you can see that it is made of 4 squares with each square having three different colors of triangles. Each square has 1 big triangle and 2 small triangles.

Here are some other paper pinwheel quilt blocks made by classmates.

3. Maple Leaf + Pinwheel Quilt Blocks: After we had made paper maple leaf blocks and paper pinwheel blocks, we made Maple Leaf + Pinwheel Quilt Blocks.

Here are some paper maple leaf + pinwheel quilt blocks. If you look closely you can see that each maple leaf + pinwheel quilt block has 5 rows with 5 square patches in each row. When you put 2 maple leaf quilt blocks with 2 pinwheel quilt blocks you get a 25 patch quilt block.

Did you notice that the two maple leaf blocks have opposite leaf and background colors?

Did you notice that the two maple leaf blocks share a square?

Did you notice the pinwheels have opposite color patterns?
