"Studio Sunnyside"
Our Classroom Video Editing

Our class uses computer video editing software tools to create videos about our classrooms learning projects.
Click here to read about the videos we have produced.
First, we learn to select and sequence video clips from video tapes of our leanring activities
Second, we work in small groups to decide the titles for each video clip. We think of titles the same way we think about our "Puffin Prewrite" ideas when we are doing our own writing using the Bird Print Writing Process. We want to have the title tell the main idea of each video clip.
Third, we work in small groups to compose the narration for each video clip. First, we each say sentence ideas. We think of sentence ideas the same way we do when we do in our "Swan Draft" writing. We want the sentences to have good descriptive language. We decide on the sentences we want from everyone's ideas and write them down. Then we edit and revise them like we do when we use our "Egret Edit", "Owl Edit" and "Wren Revise" in our Bird Print Writing Process. We want our sentence sto be the best they can be! Our sentences become our video script!
Fourth, we take turns starting to record the narration using our video script. Sometimes, one person narrates alone and sometimes we do it in duet or trio voices. After each recording, we listen to it to decide if the narrator(s) used good expression, had fluency in reading the words, and read with accurate rate so that the time of the narration fits into the time of the video clip. We re-record until we get the narration just the way we want it. (When we like the way the narration sounds we cheer and say "That's great!")

Fifth, when we have finished the narration for the whole video story, including the ending credits, we copy the video from our computer to a VHS tape. We type and print the final copy of the script. We think about this step as being like our "Peregrine Publish" in our Bird print Writing process.
Sixth, we takes turns taking the video and script home to share with our families! We also send copies of the videos for our videos, like the Water Habitat video, to our iEARN school friends around the world!
Assessment: Our teacher assesses our reading by listening to us read the video scripts while she records and scores our accuaracy, rate, fluency, and retelling using the same process she uses to check us no our schools reading books.
This is a great way to learn to read and write at school!
