Primary Grade High Frequency Words
Below are the Pullman School District First and Second Grade High Frequency Words (words that frequently appear in reading texts). These grade level word lists are used in our district to assess each child's sight reading skills for high frequency words at 1st and 2nd grade. The goal is for children to know the sight words for their grade level by the end of the school year. In our classroom, we are also using this list to work on spelling words so that when the children are doing their writing, they will know how to use the book spellings for these high frequency words.
To help your child learn these words at home, start with your child's grade list and help him/her learn five words at a time beginning in the first column. Help your child learn each word by first highlighting it on the screen, reading it aloud, spelling it, and then writing it down on paper or typing it into a document on your computer for practice. Use the written or computer document list to keep working on the words. Proceed through the lists of words until your child has learned them for sight reading and spelling. Have fun making word games with the list including trying to create a crossword puzzle with the some of the words as your child learns them.
