Accelerated Reader (AR): New Reading Program at Sunnyside School
Our whole school is starting a new computer reading program called Accelerated Reader (AR). Students read and study books that are on the AR book list. Then, using our school computers, students answer comprehension questions for the books they have read and studied. On Thursday, May 17, our school librarian helped us check out books that are easy for us to read to help us start using the AR program. Our AR assignment is to practice reading these books at home with someone in our family and practice reading them at home by ourselves. Then, we bring the book back to school to read them with someone in our classroom. Then, we will use our school computers to answer questions about the books we have read. The computer will tell us how many of the questions about the book we answered correctly. The computer will keep track of the books we read and can print a report of our reading progress.
Important Math Facts!
We are working on on memorizing our math facts for addition and subtraction from 1 to 20. We are using math fact cards in the classroom. We are memorizing family math facts for the two digit numbers from 10 to 20, for example memorizing all the math facts for 12 in a pattern of 0+12=12, 1+11=12, 2+10=12, 3+9=12, 4+8=12,5+7=12...
Please help your child memorize math facts at home. Thanks!
Learning Money Math
Help your child work on money values at home for pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, one dollar, five dollars, and ten dollars. Your child can set up a pretend store at home using items from your kitchen pantry or their toys, make price tags for them, make paper play money and coins to practice counting money and making change. Have fun!
Learning Clock Times
Using both a regular clock and a digital clock, help your child practice telling time first for the hour, half hour, and then for fifteen and forty-five minutes, for every five minute interval from five to fifty-five, and then to the minutes.
