We are sending you a packet of things for our workshop that you can put up and show at the museum on YouthCaN day.

1. Murals of the pond

*We are going to send you big murals of the pond to put up at the museum for the workshop.

*They will be done with bright crayons and watercolors.

*The murals will be about 3feet by 6 feet big.

2. Bird Paintings

*We are going to send you large paintings of male and female mallard ducks, Canada geese and great blue herons.

*These are birds that come to the pond.

3. Tree Paintings

*We are going to send you large paintings of the trees and shrubs that are at the pond.

4. Macroinvertebrate Paintings

* We are going to send you big sketches of the macroinvertebrates that we found in the pond when the water was clean.

*We are also going to send big sketches of the macroinvertebrates that we think would be in the pond when the water is polluted.

5. Pond Videotape

* We are going to send a videotape that we are making of the of the pond.

*It tells the story about studying the pond, restoring the pond island, and how the island and pond looks now.

6. Pond Digital Image Slide Show

We are going to send you a digital image slide show about the pond that you can show on a computer at the museum.

7. Pond Photo Journals

*We will send you copies of some of the pond photo journals.

Our Plans for the Workshop

In our workshop, we are going to tell you about:

1. the history of the pond study and how it started in 1993

1st pond photo journal

2. how we use computers to write and share our email about the pond and our pond water habitat website

3. the digital camera and video camera we use at the pond; we will be showing the digital camera and video camera

4. how the class worked with the city to rebuild the island and clean the pond

5. how we planted grass seeds on the island

we will be showing:

the grass seeding bag

6. The books we read about water habitats and the photo journals we make on the computer

7. how we study the macroinvertebrates in the water to see if it is clean or polluted

we will be showing:

*net for collecting macroinvertebrates

*tub for collecting pond water

*baster for putting big macroinvertebrates into the icecube trays for studying them

*tweezers for putting small macroinvertebrates into the icecube trays

*hands lens and magnifying glasses to look at the macroinvertebrates

*rulers to measure the macroinvertebrates

spray bottle to keep the macroinvertebrates wet while we study them

8. how we take the water pH and water temperatures

pH strips

water thermometer

9. We will try to show:

a live turtle from the pond

maybe a water strider if they are there in April and May

a red ozier dogwood plants that we are helping the city plant on the island

a small willow tree like the one on the island and a small ponderosa pine tree like the ones at the pond habitat

a model of a duck nest made with the grasses that the ducks use for their nests

10. Our new pond projects:

*making signs for people not to feed bread to the ducks

*planting more grasses and shrubs on the island

*making a guide pamphlet about the birds, insects, turtles and trees/shrubs at the pond

*making signs telling people not to put their pet turtles or goldfish into the pond

*helping the city keep the fish population from getting to big

*****We are designing and making pond habitat t-shirts for the class to wear when we give our workshop

*****We are getting some bird costumes sewn to show what male and female mallard ducks, Canada geese, and Great Blue herons look like. Some people in the class will wear these costumes and tell about these birds!
