In September 2000, we studied ladybugs in our classroom and out on our school playground. We read books about ladybugs and learned about how they hibernate. In Spring 2001, we are watching for ladybugs to come out of hibernation. Read on to learn about our Ladybug Science!

We are looking for ladybugs on the playground in the tall grass by the fence.

A classmate is looking for a ladybug and we think he found one ladybug!

There were ladybugs on the tall grasses.

The ladybugs hibernate down in the tall grasses when it gets cold, very cold!! They bundle together to keep themselves warm.

A ladybug is on a classmate's thumb.

Our class found a grasshopper on the tall grass.

A classmate has a grasshopper on her hand.

We pretended to be ladybugs huddling together to keep warm from the cold wind.

A classmate's Mom brought us a ladybug house. She is showing the ladybug house to the class.

When we looked inside the ladybug house, there were raisins cut in half so the ladybugs have something to eat. There were lots of ladybugs in the house. The ladybugs ate the raisins. Everyday, we added a little bit of water for ladybugs to drink.

Sometimes, we put ladybugs in a jar to look at them through magnifying glasses. We put a net over the jar so they wouldn't come out. The ladybugs all huddled together at the top of the jar.

Two classmates are making paper ladybugs. Everyone in the class made one. We used red, yellow, orange, brown and black construction paper for the ladybug bodies and wing covers. We used goldish-brown tissue paper for the flying wings.

Here is one of the finsihed ladybugs. This ladybug has its wing covers open so you can see the flying wings underneath. Her ladybug is getting ready "to fly".

When the weather turned cold, we put our paper ladybugs out in the hall, up in a corner, huddled together to hibernate for the winter. We made brown paper leaves to cover them and to protect them in fall. When the snow started falling outside, we made white paper snowflakes to cover them for the winter.
When Spring came, we took down our paper ladybugs from the hall where they had been huddled all winter and took them outside to pretend to "set them free and let them fly".
