Owl Science

When we heard owls around our school and our classmates reported hearing them at their homes, we studied these nocturnal birds!

The Washington State University Veterinary School Raptor Recovery Program brought owls to our classroom and gave us a science lesson about raptors.

We did activities from the book Owls: On Silent Wings by Ann C. Cooper, illustrated by Randi Eyre and Majories C. Leggitt and published by the Denver Museum of Natural History and Robert Rinehard, 1994.

We made owl identification cards to help us learn about owls.

We read books from our school library about owls.

We took a field trip to the Washington State University Conner Museum to see birds.

We decided to use the owl name for a step in our writing process called Owl Edit because this is the step when we look wisely in dictionaries or conference with a teacher to learn the book spellings for words we want to use in our writing.

We used our classroom computers to write owl reports. Classmates worked together on each report. We learned to use books to help us do research for our owl reports.

Here are the books we used:

Easy Field Guide to Common Desert Birds of Arizona by Richard and Sharon Nelson, published by Primer Publishers, 1998

Children's Guide to Birds by Jinny Johnson, published by Simon and Schuster, 1996

National Audubon Society First Field Guide: Birds, by National Audubon Society, published by Scholastic, 1998

Peterson First Guides: Birds by Roger Tory Peterson, published by Houghton Mifflin, 1986

The Book of North American Owls by Helen Roney Sattler, published by Clarion Books, 1995

Everyone's Everywhere Backyard Bird Book by the Editors of Klutz Books, published by Klutz Books, 1992

The Bird Atlas by Barbara Taylor, published by Dorling Kindersley, 1993

We made drawings of owls. Here are our owl drawings.

We hope you enjoyed our owls!
