Quebec, Canada Layover day, June 4,2000
1. Odyssey Goals: Layover day, prepare for flight to Paris, FRANCE
2. My Goal: Call my classroom, see Quebec
We have unexpected extra time in Quebec because the airline that is flying us to Paris was not able to fly us out until the evening of our scheduled flight day, June 6 at 7pm.
Therefore we have a day and a half to spend seeing Quebec.
I got up and started my laundry before breakfast and finished drying it after it. I caught up on some of my journaling, called Jim, then made a call to my classroom of 1st grade students. Ms.Jensen, their teacher, had them all prepared to ask me questions about my travels. It was wonderful to here their voices again.
We used the speaker phone on the classroom phone so all the children could hear my responses to their answers. We were disconnected several times due to having to use the handset to ask me questions and then switch back to speaker.
After several disconnections, we stopped the conversation. I hope I will get their questions sent to me by e-mail. But they are busy with the ending actvities of the school year.
I finished with my phone call to my classroom by 1:00 pm. I then joined Gary and Gloria Anderson, and Roma Montoya to go see the old town of Quebec.
Old town Quebec is the only walled city in North America. It is very much like the old walled cities of Europe but is newer looking because it is just 300-400 years old. At one point in it history, the British had the cannons pointing in towards the city and the inhabitants because they were afraid the French-Canadians would rise up in revolt against British rule.
Quebec is also a large port city. It sits on the large mouth of the St Lawrence river.
We walked around for awhile, then had lunch at a sidewalk cafe. Afterwards we walked some more through the town, and around the walls. We stopped to have a drink in the largest hotel called Chateau de Frontenac in Quebec. It is a landmark for Quebec. It is built is the style of the chateaus of the Loire Valley in France where we would be cicycling.
We had a beautiful sunny day...blue skies and warm sun. The trees were all leafed out in their new spring-green leaves.
The buildings are built touching each other. They are brighty painted...white, cream, blue, violet, green shutters, some had bright red roofs.
That evening I packed up as much as I could then went to sleep around 11 p.m.
June 6, TRAVEL DAY TO PARIS
I didn't plan on doing much this day. I got up later than usual, had breakfast, finished my packing, loaded up my bike and gear into the trucks that would transport it to the airport. We had to checkout by noon. Donna and I walked over to the mall to post of some things to our homes. I then had some lunch while Donna went shopping.
We were to return to the dormitories at the university to catch charter bus to the airport by 3 p.m. TK&A decided to use their sag wagons to transport the riders in small groups. So we had to wait at the dorms and the airport for several hours before we took off for Paris.
It was a 5 hour flight. Not long at all but I did't get much sleep.
3. Evaluation: I am happy that I made the phone connction with my students. I got to see a little of Quebec. Just enough to think, "Oh, this would be a great city to come back to."
4. What I learned: I am glad that I don't stress myself out by trying to do and see everything.
